www.vintagezildjians.com has been set up specifically to help drummers identify the era of their Zildjian cymbals, from the hand hammered, dark-toned & trashy K Istanbuls right up to modern heavier and brighter zildjians from the late 20th Century.
The site contains the latest eBay auctions for Vintage Zildjian cymbals so you can see there and then what is available, what is selling and how much you could expect to pay as a purchaser or receive as a vendor.
It is a common misconception that the funky shaped foam panels we see in
recording studios are somehow designed to sound-proof the room and stop noise
getting either out or in.
They're not.
These foam panels are designed to treat the sound within the room in order that
the object sounds can be as neutral and natural as possible without the room
adding in all kinds of extra characteristics that will not exist in the intended
listening environment.
Peter Mason goes into the subject in much greater detail below.
There
is an increasing number of online home-made videos and tutorials showing various
aspects of the drum making and drum finishing processes, some of these are are
reasonable and some are not so great. Many of the 'how its made' variety give an
insight into the major drum manufacturer's plants and processes that are very
informative, but use machines and techniques that the small-time or hobby
builder can never hope to use. John Dutra's Guerrilla Drum Making represents the
first professionally produced tutorial that I have come across regarding Drum
making that relies on common or garden tools and techniques - I am mightily
impressed.
