Well, in the midst of all
the hub-bub I started over the Aquarian Drumset Tuning video, I actually put on
some Double Thins and tried them out.
I think they are living up
to their intent. They definitely fit the bill as a head between a single ply
and a double ply. I was told they are around 12 mil in thickness. This is a
very nice gauge, as they will be more durable than a single ply, yet not as dead
as most double plies.
They tuned up quickly and
easily, living up to the hype. Did they tune quicker than any other brand? I
did not notice any difference.
They do sound nice. Do they
sound nicer than any other brand? I don't notice any difference. I will pay
attention, in the future, to the sound of these heads, as well as their
durability.
Maybe I will get a better
picture of them, overall, with extended use. It is difficult to compare the
sound of these to any other head, because the make-up is so different. But they
are definitely more open than any 2 ply head I have ever played. I'm sure
that's due to the thinner plies. That is a good thing for us. Maybe the other
makers will follow suit.
I also like the smaller logo
on these. As much as I like Remos Powerstroke3 line, the big logo and the
double ring printed around the edge just look tacky to me. Too much crap. Like
those pick-ups that have all the trim and spoilers and stripes,... yuck. I
digress...
Price wise, they seem to run
a little more than Remo, but in line with Evans, so they're not too expensive.
Bottom line: I think I like
them. I won't let Roy's personality cloud my opinion of his products. I think
I will soon buy a set of StudioX heads for my Sonorlites and see how they sound.
