| The Cuica |
 The cuíca is
perhaps the funniest Brazilian instrument of all, it's sound is similar to the
cry of the small jungle mammal for which it's named, is basically a
single-headed drum
with a small bamboo stick connected to the head. The cuíca originated in Africa,
where it was used to hunt lions. The sound is similar to that of the female
lion, so male lions would be attracted to it.
Talvez o instrumento Brasileiro mais engraçado de todos, a cuíca ( cujo nome foi dado pela semelhança do som do instrumento com o choro do pequeno mamifero que possui o mesmo nome) é um instrumento com uma pele geralmente de animal e com um pequeno pau de bamboo dentro do instrumento. Originalmente a cuica era usado na África para a caça de leões. O som produzido era parecido ao da leoa atraindo assim aos leões.
Use a damp piece of cloth-you can use water or kerosene-folded and placed between the thumb and index finger. Rub the bamboo stick with the cloth somewhat gently. Friccionando o bamboo Um pedaço de pano úmido com água (vários cuiqueiros preferem o uso da querosene) dobrado é posto entre os dedos . Friccione o pano contra a vareta de bamboo. P.S. Vc nao precisa friccionar muito forte.

Figura 1-Aberto-Produz um som grave. A tua mão(Esquerda) estará fora da pele da cuíca.
Figura 2-Fechado- Produz um som mais agudo. Pressione as pontas dos dedos da mão esquerda (Não use as unhas, por favor!)na pele do instrumento, bem próximo a cabecinha onde o Bamboo esta amarrado.
Patterns In this first exercise you will play steady eigth notes by rubbing the bamboo alternately towards and away from the head using the damp cloth described above. Hold the stick loosely so that the rhythm and pitch will remain constant(and so you don't break the stick!). No primeiro ex. vc. vai tocar todas as notas fricsionando o pano úmido contra o bamboo. Todas as notas serão graves. O movimento será pra frente é pra trás. Cuidado ao friccionar o bamboo faça-o de uma maneira relaxada, não muito tenso, pra que não quebra. Basic/Básico
