Just before Christmas in 1978 I found myself doing a stint at the Power Plant across the loch from Larne( open blue boat twice across the loch each day). During my stay there was a celebration at the return to Ulster, of an old gun running boat, I think, called "The Clyde Valley"( ?) After breakfasting, I was surprised to hear a marching band, with Lanbeg drummers Moving down Larne high street towards the dock. They were soon followed by others and I walked along-very impressive with the young 'drum majors' leading each community group, doing amazing ariel tricks with the batton(?) At the dock the groups assembled, the playing restarting with the arrival of each group, until hte 'meet' was full. The power of this combined playing was extremely impressive. The Reverend I. Paisley officiated, aided by two acolytes and the greeting of the boat, plus some history and dedication/prayers, soon produced a great deal of tension. Buckets were passed around and quickly filled with 'paper' money.
Walking back into town, after the meet broke up, I passed a bar forecourt where a 'contest of drums was starting. I find it impossible to adequately describe the full power of the whole experience but can easily understand the fear that 'individual treatment' to the drums, must have had to isolated Catholic families, in Ulster, in times gone by. |

i stumbled upon this site while searching for pieces on the dhol, and will certainly explore the site further.
i just wanted to correct a minor error in your page on the dhol, regarding the venue of the incomparable pappu saeen's thursday night performances (if you'll pardon the pedantry). it is actually the shrine of hazrat baba shah jamal, the 17th century (CE) sufi saint. the area and the shrine are referred to, in lahore, as simply "shah jamal".
and you're right... pappu is truly amazing. |
