This area of the site has grown so much that it now has its own domain - Drum Tuning at TUNADRUM
Intro
Tuning a drum set is something that many drummers know a little about but most struggle with it. In my experience, few understand enough of the principles and mechanics of what & why and tuning generally therefore is a bit hit and miss.
In my opinion it defeats the purpose of investing hard earned money in buying a beautiful drum kit, then proceeding to adorn it with gaffer tape, bits of beer mats, etc. It probably takes longer to organise one of the aforementioned items than it does to tune the drum once you know what you are doing.

Using Acoustic Foam to
treat a room.
It is a common misconception that the funky shaped foam panels we see in
recording studios are somehow designed to sound-proof the room and stop noise
getting either out or in.
They're not.
These foam panels are designed to treat the sound within the room in order that
the object sounds can be as neutral and natural as possible without the room
adding in all kinds of extra characteristics that will not exist in the intended
listening environment.
Peter Mason goes into the subject in much greater detail below.

Review
Guerrilla Drum Making DVD
86 Minutes
John Dutra
www.guerrilladrummaking.com
There
is an increasing number of online home-made videos and tutorials showing various
aspects of the drum making and drum finishing processes, some of these are are
reasonable and some are not so great. Many of the 'how its made' variety give an
insight into the major drum manufacturer's plants and processes that are very
informative, but use machines and techniques that the small-time or hobby
builder can never hope to use. John Dutra's Guerrilla Drum Making represents the
first professionally produced tutorial that I have come across regarding Drum
making that relies on common or garden tools and techniques - I am mightily
impressed.
