Ever had a djembe, loved it, played it, put in
that very last diamond to make it sound perfect and BANG the head goes? Damn!
What will you do?, isn't all that rope work
complicated?.... What... I can't just buy a new head from the drumstore?... Oh
No - I have to use a bit of a dead goat?
At last a DVD has come on to the market that
can answer the needs of those with busted head syndrome. It's a practical, no
nonsense, step by step method to help you fix a new head on to your drum.
The drum world has needed this resource for a
long time.
Shorty starts off from
scratch; drumshell, 3 rings, rope, cloth, skin and takes you step by step
through the process, clearly showing a proven and effective way of re-heading
your drum:
- Wrapping the rings
- Tying larks head loops
- Lacing the verticals
- Mounting & tensioning the head on the flesh hoop
- Fixing the head to the drum
- Tensioning verticals
- Shaving
the drum (the fastest I have ever seen)
- Evening the skin height
- Pulling diamonds
- Head replacement
- Tuning advice
I (Paul) have re headed maybe 50 djembes in my time and
through that experience have picked up or worked out lots of wee 'ways' and time
saving tips and the majority of them are all here. I wish I'd have had this dvd
5 years ago.
I only have one minor negative comment which is that in a
couple of places the video shown doesn't always display what Shorty is
demonstrating at that point. It's only a few seconds missed out here and there
so it's not critical but a minor niggle in an overwhelmingly good and useful
product.
I have no hesitation in recommending this DVD to anyone
who would ever have occasion to re-head a djembe. It does exactly what it sets
out to do and it does it damned well.
Way to go Shorty
