Well,
after borrowing joem's Brady 5.5x14 Jarrah Ply Blue Fiddleback Gloss snare drum
for a week or so, I was impressed and decided to splurge on both a 5.5x14 Jarrah
Ply Turtleback Gloss and a 6.5x14 Jarrah Ply Wandoo Burl Gloss snare drum. (I
felt that the funds were more safely invested in these little masterpieces than
in today'... Read More >> |

Mark Polis - (c) July 2002
I just spent some time with joem's 5-1/2"x14" Brady Jarrah Ply snare
drum, which he so graciously loaned to me for a test drive (in temporary swap
for my 5"x14" Canopus Zelkova).
Here's my preliminary take on it, for what it's worth:

| Spaun 14x5 Maple | Spaun 14x5 Maple (c) Lyle Caldwell
I just got my new snare today, and while I haven't had time to do
anything extensive with it yet (the joy of small children and non-soundproofed
rooms), I did play for about an hour and thought I'd share some initial
impressions.
It's a 5x14 8 ply maple shell, no reinforcement rings, with
wood hoops, and it really is much different than any snare I've come across
before.

I just
spent quite some time over the last day or two really getting to know the 6.5x13
SPIRIT snare drum owned by Nick "soulbelly" Amoroso. Nick so graciously sent me the drum,
(and I in turn simultaneously sent him my Canopus Zelkova for his perusal -
we'll await his report).
Well the
Spirit drum is GORGEOUS. It's made of Ironwood, a wood so dense (and heavy) that
it makes even Jarrah and Sheoak ... Read More >> |

This is from
our very own Mike Radcliffe ("-MIKE-"). I have to give Mike a plug and
say that he was very quick and helpful with all of my questions and he shipped
the drum exceedingly quickly. Thanks again Mike!
I originally wanted to order some vintage-style single flanged hoops
with clips for my 5x14 Ludwig Black Beauty. I talked to Mike about it and he
figured that it would cost about $100.00 (t... Read More >> |
