Beth Carvalho was the first to record this Rythm in 1978 in the album De pé no chão with Sereno on the Tan Tãn. Soon Sereno, Bira presidente, Almir Guineto, Jorge Aragão & other members of the bloco Cacique de Ramos started with the group called Fundo de Quintal with their first cd called " Samba é no Fundo de Quintal " in 1980. Today this instrument can be used to accompany the Surdo or it can be used by itself as the base of small, intimate samba groups, in bigger shows or even in some Samba Schools. Primeiramente usado em grupos de pagode no lugar do Surdo pelo tamanho do instrumento(o Tantãn sendo bem menor do que o Surdo seria mais fácil para se carregar e entrar nos ônibus, que geralmente era o meio de locomoção dos pagodeiros, quase todos de classe média). Sereno do Bloco de carnaval Cacique de Ramos e depois do grupo Fundo de Quintal é a pessoa responsável pela introdução desse instrumento nos pagodes de mesa. O primeiro disco gravado com esse novo instrumento foi da Beth Carvalho "De Pé no Chão" em 1978, e o primeiro do Grupo Fundo de Quintal foi em 80 "Samba é no Fundo de Quintal"Listen to any of the following artists to hear how the tantãn is played: Fundo de Quintal, Beth Carvalho, Martinho da Vila, or Zeca Pagodinho. As with any instrument, you should start out practicing the rhythms slowly, until you've gotten used to the technique and the 'feeling', then you can work on your speed. Position of the instrument The Tantãn can be played standing or sitting. This is the sitting way. Standing you need a strap that goes from the head of the instrument until the end passing over your shoulder. O Tantãn pode ser tocado em pé ou sentado. Na foto estou sentado. Em pé vc. precisa de um talabarte que vai de um lado atéo outro do instrumento com um grande espaço para o teu ombro.
